Our symposium in Baltimore was a great success thanks to the many members, speakers exhibitors and sponsors who worked so hard to make it so. Baltimore is an interesting city with plenty of activity, and the hotel was welcoming and well situated in the heart of it all. A good time was had by all.

We heard from a diverse group of speakers ranging from low intensity medical applications to high power process enhancement, materials joining and industrial applications. Some of these papers are available to members now and some will be published during the year and issued with the Vibrations newsletter.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Robert Green of Johns Hopkins University entertained and educated us with his anecdotes concerning nondestructive testing and some of the early pioneers of ultrasonics.

New officers and board members were voted on during our business luncheon and we were delighted to welcome Mark Schafer as our new UIA President. Mark has served on the Board of Directors and was chairman for our last two symposia. We know he will bring his leadership skills to his new position. Kevin Klein will serve as Vice President. Kevin has been a member of the Board for the past two years.

Proctor and Gamble again generously donated a $1,500 check for the best student paper. The recipient was Gregory Szewczyk from the University of Illinois, Department of Chemistry. We were delighted to have Gregory present his paper and receive his award in person. Congratulations to Gregory; I'm certain we will be hearing more from him in the future.

The NIST tour captured our attention. We had a bus full of eager participants and were split into four groups for the tour, which gave us the opportunity to ask questions and enjoy the hospitality of NIST personnel. It is always good to know that at least some of our tax money is put to good use!

We had sixteen exhibitors this year and were able to collect some valuable information about the various products offered by many of our member companies.

Our educational courses were well attended. Dr. Karl Graff explained the underlying driving mechanisms of high power ultrasonic processes. George Bromfield and Emery Rose discussed control of ultrasonic transducers using adaptive and DSP techniques.
